DHCP

Dynamic host configuration protocol is a network protocol use to configure device that are connected to a network. The protocol is used in Server/Client model network dhcp configures data such as,

• IP Address
• Default Route
• DNS server addresses from a DHCP server.

A DHCP server maintains a database of available IP addresses and configuration information. When the server receives a request from a client, the DHCP server determines the network to which the DHCP client is connected, and then allocates an IP address that is appropriate for the client using BOOTP (Bootstrap) Protocol, and sends configuration information appropriate for that client.

• DHCP uses IPv4 as well as IPv6
• A DHCP address is valid for one session only the address must be issued again to the client if it want to join the dhcp network, reissued ip address may be same or varied from the previous one.

The whole and sole process of dhcp involves four process :

1. DHCP Discovery
2. DHCP Offer
3. DHCP Request
4. DHCP Acknowledgement
